This past Friday I had the honor of massaging a cancer patient thanks to an amazing program Freedom Massage participates in called Unite for HER, which subsidizes holistic treatments & services for women with cancer. This was the first time I had heard about this non-profit group, so I did some research in hopes of spreading awareness to others.
Unite for HER was established in 2009, after founder Sue Weldon experienced a lack of accessible resources and reliable information when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004. She knew there had to be holistic ways to support her mentally, spiritually, and physically as she followed a course of aggressive medical treatments, but wasn’t sure where to find specialized care. Since its inception, the goal of Unite for HER has been to educate, support, and encourage women throughout their battle with breast cancer. In the Philadelphia area, they partner with top-tier specialists in the fields of nutrition, massage therapy, acupuncture, yoga, and meditation. Their website is also a library of information to educate people on the health benefits of complementary treatments.
The most impressive part of Unite for HER, in my opinion, is their subsidized services. According to their website, ” Unite for HER nonprofit organization offers the Path to Healing Grant program to women living in the Philadelphia area who have been diagnosed with breast cancer within the last 18 months…Our Path to Healing Grant is designed to introduce breast cancer patients to therapies that can help restore their health, while easing the financial burden of paying for those beneficial treatments. In collaboration with area professionals and physicians, we will provide funding for women to receive treatments, enabling them to renew their their body, mind and spirit, which is crucial for becoming fully healed.”
I feel so blessed to work in an office that supports such a worthy cause. The opportunity represents one of the major reasons I became a licensed massage therapist–I want to help people, and make a positive impact in someone’s health and spirit. Massage Therapy is a form of health care and an organization like Unite for HER helps validate and support that belief–truly a win-win partnership. I was a little bummed to learn this non-profit is local to the Philadelphia region only, but organizations like this may exist across the nation. And if not, perhaps this is inspiration to launch a similar program in your area.
