Product Review & Giveaway: Hemp Hearts

Well, I just found my new favorite brekkie bowl add-in!

My curiosity about hemp had been peaked for awhile, so I was really excited to finally have an excuse to try them.

Hemp is in the Cannabis family—but lest you think it’s a form of pot, I assure you it’s a high-quality plant protein that is completely vegan, grain-free, and gluten-free. It is very minimally processed and is only raw shelled. There are no additives, oils, or anything else. Just pure hemp. Though I promise this is not that ratty hemp necklace your 8th grade boyfriend bought you down the shore…er, that may just be me!

It is 100% REAL food.

Hemp has a slightly nutty flavor, almost like walnuts, and has a smooth flaky finish, making the texture much less obtrusive than, say, flaxseeds. It’s soft and adds a nice round flavor to yogurt, banana nice cream, salads, energy balls, or homemade granola. It pairs deliciously with carob nibs, pumpkin seeds, flaxseeds, and coconut flakes when sprinkled over berries and sliced bananas.

I didn’t go crazy with recipe development. When something is simply this yummy, there’s no need to! It’s an awesome, healthy add-in that is packed with protein.

I was sent a 2 oz package and since I’m only using a sprinkle with each serving, it’s lasting a lot longer than expected. Which is great, since one of the reasons I have hesitated on trying hemp has been the price tag; however, when you consider that Manitoba Harvest sells their 8 oz pack for $8.99, it’s actually a really reasonable price.

    I love adding a little texture and crunch to salads and veggie dishes and hemp seeds are prefect for that!

    I am really trying to focus on myself and trying to be as healthy as I can, I have been doing Zumba for over a year, but recently added classes and now try for 5 days a week. I am trying to be the best I can be for myself and my health.
