Monday Motivation: Sharing Health Online vs Reality

Ever feel like your blog or social media presence isn’t getting the viewership or growth you want? Maybe you’re a little discouraged.

I have moments when it feels like I’m putting a lot of time into my blog but no one is reading it. Or that I’m “competing” with too many others that are generating similar content. Or sometimes I get a little overwhelmed by other bloggers who are either doing it better, or frustrated by those who aren’t doing it so good and yet have a large following.

But, then I have moments where everything is put back into perspective. Moments that remind me that “life” on social media is significantly different than real life. 

What do I mean?

Well, as someone who is very passionate about fitness/nutrition and is running a fitness/nutrition blog on several social media platforms, I naturally follow all similar types of fitness/nutrition people. I am also a group fitness instructor at and one of the managers of a fitness & wellness center, where fit-minded people work and fit-minded people come to workout. Which means, sometimes I’m in this group-think like bubble where I start feeling like EVERYONE is into fitness and nutrition! Cerebrally, I KNOW this isn’t true! Obesity is at an ALL time HIGH in America! But when I’m surrounded by similar people, it puts a shade of rose on my lenses.

However, when I take a few steps back and interact with a larger population of people—whether that be family, childhood friends, acquaintances from church, strangers, etc.—I’m brought back down to reality and see that my messages about fitness and nutrition ARE important. There are so many others who need the message in my day-to-day interactions in life and online.

In the Christian community (for lack of a better descriptor) we encourage each other to go out and disciple. Share the Good News with others and help lead them to Christ. But we also are always careful to remind that sometimes we’re just planting a seed. That we can’t expect everyone we speak to about our faith and about Jesus to suddenly abandon their life and commit to a relationship with Christ. Sometimes we get those quick conversions (I haven’t, but Lord I pray someday I will!) but often times, our words are just a nudge towards The Word. Maybe a few weeks, months, or years from now several others will plant the seed until one day, the seed takes root and the person does finally come to Christ.

And isn’t health and nutrition like that?

Maybe I won’t be the one that’s going to change your life. Maybe you’ll never read my blog, but one of my posts on Instagram resonated with you and you’ve stored it in the back of your mind. Maybe you’ve never seen my Instagram, but I tweeted an inspirational message one time that helped encourage you to make a healthier choice that one day. Or maybe you’ve never seen anything of mine online, but you come and take my Lean Conditioning class. These little microscopic moments we create through our online contact and real-life interactions will contribute to inspiring others now AND in the future. Your words are of value. Your leadership matters.

Maybe you’ll inspire just one person today, and that’s okay! This is the mentality you need to keep going.

And please know that it’s important that you keep going! Keep sharing the motivation, fitness tips, meal photos, and nutrition knowledge. Don’t let someone who’s got a larger following discourage you. Support them and know that they’re paving the way for YOU to be more successful down the road when more people start realizing the importance of fitness and nutrition, and they’re looking for other resources. BE THAT RESOURCE!
