Motivation Monday: When God Nudges Us

Throughout this past week, my boys and I filled two shoe boxes with various art supplies, books, toys, and underwear for Operation Christmas*. We chose to make one box for a girl aged 5-9, and one box for a boy also aged 5-9.

Around mid-week, I was unbuckling my 2 year old from his car seat, when I noticed a children’s book of The Lord’s Prayer on the floor of my minivan. I had never seen it before, but I assumed it had been given to my Kindergartener at school or at church. I was in a rush so I left the book where it was.

On Friday morning, as we made our final purchases to fill the box, I kept thinking about the book. I felt an un-ignorable nudge that The Lord’s Prayer needed to be added to the boy’s box. There was no question if it needed to go in one of the boxes; it was a clear calling that the book needed to go specifically in the boy’s box.  In the midst of the chaos of Target though, I shrugged it off and finished up my shopping.

Later that day, my son and I drove to pick up his older brother from school and drop off the Operation Christmas boxes. I felt that same nudging again: The Lord’s Prayer book needed to be added to the boy’s box. As soon as we reached the parking lot, I reopened the boy’s box and added the book to the top.

I don’t know who will be on the receiving end of that box. I don’t know his story, or how much he knows about the grace we receive from our savior, Jesus Christ. What I do know is that when God speaks, we need to listen! Sometimes it’s for easy things—like adding a book to a certain box—other times it’s huge changes we need to make in our life. As someone who has a habit of praying to God that He would clearly speak to me, I realize I need to be listening more intently. To be looking for these small nudges.

How is God nudging you today? Will you be obedient?

*Operation Christmas is a wonderful charity that creates the opportunity for children from poorly developed areas throughout the world to receive a special gift on Christmas and to hear about Christ. Per their website,  “Every shoebox gift delivered by Operation Christmas Child is a tangible expression of God’s amazing love. But a shoebox is just the beginning. It also presents an opportunity in more than 100 countries for our church partners to invite children into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ through The Greatest Journey.”
